Entertainment for Summer 2010: Party on the Plank

Uptowne High Point will be the place for summer entertainment starting June 2010. Party on the Plank will take place June 3, 2010 - July 8, 2010 at the High Point Public Library. Elijah Lovejoy is a local community pastor with a vested interest to reinvigorate the culture of the centralized High Point community through a convergence of food, music, art and entertainment. Elijah is the mastermind of the Party on the Plank events that will take place on Thursdays and run for six consecutive weeks this summer in 2010. His vision is to create an opportunity for multiple groups to contribute their best work and share in the cultural renewal of the central High Point area. Elijah has aggressively sought out sponsorships including committed sponsors from North State Communications, BB&T, High Point University, High Point Regional Hospital, The Crossing Church, #1 Courtyard by Marriott, and Jim Morgan. If you or your business would like to help sponsor Party on the Plank, you can contact Elijah Lovejoy at 336-207-5216 or visit their website www.partyontheplank.com. There are many opportunities to get involved. They need sponsors, artists, musicians, food vendors, retailers, wineries, breweries, media, community organizations, and most of all for you to spread the word throughout the High Point community and beyond to come out and enjoy Party on the Plank this summer!!

Aquarius Music Hall

When our 2nd Beach Blast had to move indoors because of weather (September 17 – Part Time Party Time Band) – we held it in the Natale building (400 English St) – the former Amos Hosiery building. The venue was perfect (ok – a bit warm because the A/C wasn’t turned on soon enough), the acoustics great – and it enabled people to see other possibilities for some of these fabulous buildings that are empty, for lease or for sale.

The owner of the Natale building is now promoting the Natale building as Aquarius – the newest music hall for the triad! Go to his website to see: www.theaquariusmusichall.com . According to Gabriel (the owner), the Triad lacks a venue of this size (capacity of roughly 1,000) – and his goal is to have 2 events per week with local talent – 3 events per month with national talent…..and if this goes well – to later add restaurants into the mix.

Especially now, as the City is advocating for the Market Overlay District boundaries that will restrict the showroom areas – I think surrounding property owners would be encouraged to see how at least one property owner is attempting to market/use his property – and it might spark other creative ideas in the minds of some of the other property owners. And in talking to the owner, although the upcoming event (Nov 27) might be more appealing for the college crowd, I’ve been told that they really want to bring in a wide range of music, that would appeal to all ages and race.

I would love for us to help him get the word out any way possible – can you send this information onto any and all of your contacts? This will be great for our urban core!

CharGrill Coming to UpTowne

A restaurant that has been a favorite for decades in the Raleigh area is opening a location in Uptowne High Point.

Char Grill, which was founded in Raleigh and has been in business since 1960, will open on N. Main Street near Lexington Avenue in a building previously occupied by an Armadillo Grill restaurant.

Char Grill features open-flame cooked hamburger steak sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, French fries and milkshakes. The High Point franchise at 1525 N. Main St. will be the seventh location of the Char Grill chain and the first one outside the Research Triangle region.

The High Point franchisees, Scott Hiatt and Jeff Hunt, are restaurant operators and entrepreneurs in the greater High Point area. Hiatt, a native of High Point, said the Char Grill is the first joint restaurant venture between him and Hunt.
