Spotlight on Uptowne

Uptowne High Point is in the spotlight! City Project leaders met with the High Point City Council this week to give them a report on their vision of Uptowne. They presented renderings of a future Uptowne by High Point Architect, Peter Freeman. The drawings include a two-laned Main Street, round about fountain, condos, active store fronts, landscaping, and street scape. Leaders asked Council to consider lowering the speed limit from 45 to 25. Jay Wagner, Uptowne High Point Chair, pointed out that Uptowne will be more active when the traffic slows down and people realize what is around them. Restaurants want to create outdoor dining opportunities, yet feel uncomfortable doing so at the current speed limit. Aquarius Music Hall

When our 2nd Beach Blast had to move indoors because of weather (September 17 – Part Time Party Time Band) – we held it in the Natale building (400 English St) – the former Amos Hosiery building. The venue was perfect (ok – a bit warm because the A/C wasn’t turned on soon enough), the acoustics great – and it enabled people to see other possibilities for some of these fabulous buildings that are empty, for lease or for sale.

The owner of the Natale building is now promoting the Natale building as Aquarius – the newest music hall for the triad! Go to his website to see: www.theaquariusmusichall.com . According to Gabriel (the owner), the Triad lacks a venue of this size (capacity of roughly 1,000) – and his goal is to have 2 events per week with local talent – 3 events per month with national talent…..and if this goes well – to later add restaurants into the mix.

Especially now, as the City is advocating for the Market Overlay District boundaries that will restrict the showroom areas – I think surrounding property owners would be encouraged to see how at least one property owner is attempting to market/use his property – and it might spark other creative ideas in the minds of some of the other property owners. And in talking to the owner, although the upcoming event (Nov 27) might be more appealing for the college crowd, I’ve been told that they really want to bring in a wide range of music, that would appeal to all ages and race.

I would love for us to help him get the word out any way possible – can you send this information onto any and all of your contacts? This will be great for our urban core!

CharGrill Coming to UpTowne

A restaurant that has been a favorite for decades in the Raleigh area is opening a location in Uptowne High Point.

Char Grill, which was founded in Raleigh and has been in business since 1960, will open on N. Main Street near Lexington Avenue in a building previously occupied by an Armadillo Grill restaurant.

Char Grill features open-flame cooked hamburger steak sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, French fries and milkshakes. The High Point franchise at 1525 N. Main St. will be the seventh location of the Char Grill chain and the first one outside the Research Triangle region.

The High Point franchisees, Scott Hiatt and Jeff Hunt, are restaurant operators and entrepreneurs in the greater High Point area. Hiatt, a native of High Point, said the Char Grill is the first joint restaurant venture between him and Hunt.

Core city project focuses on "UpTown"

Core city project focuses on "uptown'

by pat kimbrough enterprise staff writer

HIGH POINT - Core City High Point representatives recently started a project they hope will contribute to the growth and revitalization of a key part of town.

"Uptown High Point" may not be a common way to describe the N. Main Street corridor, but some want the name to catch on as a destination. Core City summer interns are gathering data about the 200 businesses in the area for an inventory that will provide organizers a lay of the land as they look to the business and housing needs of this part of the city's urban core.

"This is the first inventory of the eight areas of the Core City plan," said Wendy Fuscoe, executive director of Core City High Point, a nonprofit public-private collaboration formed to promote the growth and revitalization of the city's 11-square-mile urban core. "It's generated some interest to start looking at branding and ways to design this as a destination and trying to generate some excitement and energy for businesses and residents in that area."

The inventory will cover N. Main Street from Ray Avenue to State Avenue and Lexington Avenue from Johnson Street to Long Street - an area Core City representatives and others have dubbed "uptown." The project will compile information such as the types of business, parking availability, operating hours and the historic or architectural significance of buildings in the area.

The purpose is to gather data on the current supply and demand for services, including retail stores, restaurants, entertainment and other types of business and housing needs.

Core City representatives recently met with business owners and developers to talk informally about the goals for growth and to mobilize efforts in the uptown area. Fuscoe said there have been discussions with city transportation officials about the possibility of placing banners and signage in the area touting the uptown designation.

"Instead of going to (Winston-Salem) and Greensboro for good restaurants and good shopping and good entertainment, we want to cultivate a sense of, "Hey, it's right here in our backyard, and uptown is the place you can go for quality food and quality shopping and good entertainment,'?" Fuscoe said.

The next inventory will cover the Washington Drive area outlined in the Core City plan.

First part of Core City plan gets OK

BY VICKI KNOPFLER ENTERPRISE STAFF WRITER
vknopfler@hpe.com
Dec 16,2008

HIGH POINT - The High Point City Council unanimously passed Monday the first part of the Core City revitalization plan, the Washington Drive District Plan.

The plan, under formal study for almost a year, calls for creating an entertainment and historic mixed-use district based on the area's black heritage. The city's role is to provide infrastructure, including streetscaping, parks and parking, to create an attractive and pedestrian-friendly corridor.

An earlier version of the plan called for the city to be responsible for a museum focusing on John Coltrane, the internationally famous late jazz musician who lived in High Point from his infancy through graduation from William Penn High School.

The plan, as adopted Monday, places a Coltrane museum in the private sector.

All the public comments before the City Council's vote Monday were to support the Washington Drive plan.

Glenn Chavis of High Point, an historian, spoke passionately about identifying the area with Coltrane and other entertainers. Information about Coltrane that he has been unable to verify has been printed and otherwise disseminated, Chavis said.

The same is true of the Kilby Hotel and the musicians and famous people it supposedly attracted.

Chavis, however, has been able to document famous people and musicians performing at High Point Normal and Industrial School, which became William Penn High School.

"Use our history, but make it factual," Chavis said. "Show me the facts. Let our history stand on the facts. I'll be glad to work with you."

Chavis also was critical of consultants who researched the area and made recommendations for it. One consultant in

particular, Chavis said, came to High Point with preconceived notions, one of which placed Coltrane as the most important part of High Point's black history. In fact, Coltrane did little in High Point beyond attending church and school here and participating in choirs and bands at both, Chavis said.

"We don't need gimmicks to sell Washington Street history," Chavis said.

Theodore Little Jr., who lives on E. Washington Drive and is president of Washington Drive Renaissance, a nonprofit group, spoke of his group's efforts to buy the Kilby Hotel, restore it and bring entertainment there.

"We know the city doesn't have all the money to do it ... and we know it won't be easy. The Kilby will act as a catalyst to bring more business," Little said.

Pastors Kenneth Taylor, a member of New Beginnings Full Gospel Ministry, and Dennis Leach Sr. of First Baptist Church on Washington Drive also pledged support for the Washington Drive plan.

"Washington Drive has been passed by for years," Leach said. "I'm here hoping there's some Samaritan good will."

Council considers improvements: Washington Drive District Plan may get quick approval

By Nick G. Maheras

Dec 15,2008

HIGH POINT - High Point City Council will conduct a public hearing today on the Washington Drive District Plan, the first installment of the comprehensive Core City revitalization effort.

The City Council is likely to approve the Washington Drive District Plan after the public hearing. "Council has already affirmed their interest in passing this plan," said Councilman Bill Bencini, chairman of the Planning and Development Committee. "I enthusiastically support it. My guess is so does the rest of council.

"Its strength is that it is a comprehensive plan that can not only rehabilitate an historic neighborhood, but offer some downtown entertainment and restaurant possibilities."

The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval of the Washington Drive plan on Nov. 11. Bencini's committee followed suit Dec. 2.

The plan's central idea is to create an entertainment and historic mixed-use district based on the area's black cultural and musical heritage. Responsibility for a cultural museum focused on the legacy of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane was shifted from the city to the private sector in the plan's final draft.

The plan designs a more attractive and pedestrian-friendly Washington Drive corridor with trees, decorative lampposts, widened sidewalks and streetside landscaping.

"The city's role would primarily be the infrastructure, including streetscaping, maybe a couple of parks or plazas and more on-street parking," said Andy Piper, senior planner. "(Recent zoning changes) are intended to promote the "new urbanism' design. We want to bring the buildings closer to the street, create glass storefronts and locate as much parking as we can behind the buildings."

Bencini hopes the plan's approval and infrastructure improvements will encourage private investment there.
